Hyderabad: A woman Forest Range Officer (FRO) Chole Anitha was grievously injured when brother of Sirpur TRS MLA Koneru Konappa thrashed her with a lathi during an afforestation program conducted in Kothasarsala village under Kaghaznagar at Sirpur on Sunday.
A warlike situation prevailed in Sirpur when the Telangana Forest Department officials were conducting afforestation activities as part of development of non-forest lands in the area. This was a part of the compensatory plantation in lieu of the Kaleshwaram Lift Irrigation Project (KLIP). The program was being conducted as per instructions of Chief Minister K. Chandrashekhar Rao, who was concerned about the erosion of forest cover in the State.
The Forest Department officials, as part of the project, had come to plant saplings in 20 hectare in Kothasarsala village under Kaghaznagar mandal. The Forest officials, along with workers, brought in tractors and other equipment to clear and level the land to enable plantation. Meanwhile, in a bid to dislodge the Forest personnel, TRS MLA’s brother Koneru Krishna, who is also the local Zilla Parishad Vice-Chairman, attacked the Forest officials, along with the locals and started beating them with sticks.
The officials, who were caught unaware, tried to stop the intruders. But Krishna and his followers mercilessly thrashed the government officials. They lunged forward and hit the woman FRO Anitha with sticks as she was seen standing on one of the tractors. The officer was immediately taken to the local hospital at Sirpur, where she was treated.
The FRO told the police that Koneru Krishna and his followers attacked her and the Forest officials indiscriminately. Though over 50 police personnel were present at the time of the attack, they failed to stop the MLA’s brother and the locals from attacking the officials, workers and vandalizing the equipment.
It may be mentioned here that a dispute over 20 hectare land in Kothasarasala village under Kagazhnagar was going on between the villagers and the Forest Department for some time. While farmers were demanding that the State government give pattas to them for podu cultivation, the Forest Department warned them to vacate the land. The injured Anitha was shifted to a nearby private hospital for treatment.
Meanwhile, Koneru Krishna Rao, who allegedly thrashed the FRO with a stick, submitted his resignation as ZPTC member and vice-chairman to the District Collector. Bandobust was arranged under the supervision of Khagaznagar DSP Sambaiah. District Forest Officer Raja Ramana Reddy conveyed the information to the State government.
