BJP State Chief Laxman urges ECI to intervene to postpone local body elections in Telangana

Hyderabad: The State wing of BJP on Saturday urged the Election Commission of India (ECI) to issue directions to the Telangana State Election Commission to hold the local bodies elections after the conclusion of the general elections in the state.
In a letter addressed to the EC, the state president of the party Dr. K. Laxman said that the decision of the Telangana Government to conduct Panchayat elections, while the entire nation is busy with General elections, raises serious questions of propriety. On the other hand, the TRS government in the state has claimed that the Election Commission of India has given permission to hold the elections but refrained it from declaring the results, he said.
He also said that it was not a good precedent to go for Local body elections in the midst of General elections, especially when the objective for which the elections were being conducted would not be met – the objective of installing Mandal Praja Parishads and Zilla Parishads. In his letter, he said that the state government had reduced BC reservations in Panchayat Raj institutions from 34% to 23% citing Supreme Court orders despite the demands from the people belonging to Backward classes that the Government of Telangana must explore legal and parliamentary avenues to ensure the restoration of the quota for BCs.
